Risks & side effects

Main risks & side effects

  • Preparing a tooth for a crown involves removing some natural tooth structure, which is irreversible.
  • Temporary sensitivity to hot or cold may occur after preparation.
  • In some cases the nerve may be affected, occasionally requiring root canal treatment.
  • Crowns have a finite lifespan and may need replacement or repair over time.
  • Gum margins can change over the years, which may affect appearance.
  • This is an elective, privately billed (self-pay) treatment, not covered by Japanese national health insurance.

Self-pay (non-insured) treatment. Individual results vary. Published with the patient's written consent.

Understanding the options

Single-layered vs multi-layered zirconia — how the material is chosen

Single-layered (monolithic) zirconia

Single-layered, or monolithic, zirconia is milled from one uniform shade of high-strength zirconia. Its even composition gives it the highest strength of the zirconia options, which makes it well suited to back teeth (molars), where chewing forces are greatest. It is also the more cost-efficient choice — ¥179,900 per crown at RODIN (incl. tax).

Multi-layered zirconia

Multi-layered zirconia is manufactured with a built-in gradient — more chromatic and opaque toward the gum (dentine zone) and progressively more translucent toward the incisal edge — mimicking the natural transition of a real tooth.

That gradient makes it the usual choice for front teeth (anterior), where blending with the neighbouring natural teeth matters most. The more involved material carries a higher fee — ¥229,900 per crown at RODIN (incl. tax).

How RODIN chooses — and the price difference

As a general rule we use multi-layered zirconia for front teeth (where aesthetics lead) and single-layered/monolithic zirconia for back teeth (where strength leads). The final choice is made for your case and confirmed in writing.

The ¥50,000-per-crown difference reflects the more involved, gradient material and its aesthetic role — not a difference in overall 'quality'. Both are high-strength zirconia restorations.

Prices include tax. Material selection is individualised; individual results vary.
