Three-unit zirconia bridge
Tooth loss with periodontal disease. Implant placement was contraindicated due to the compromised periodontal condition; adjacent teeth already had restorations, making them suitable bridge abutments.

Case details
Treatment, cost and duration
- Patient profile
- Female, 30s
- Diagnosis
- Tooth loss with periodontal disease. Implant placement was contraindicated due to the compromised periodontal condition; adjacent teeth already had restorations, making them suitable bridge abutments.
- Treatment
- Professional cleaning, extraction of one tooth, and a three-unit multilayered zirconia bridge using the adjacent restored teeth as abutments. An implant was considered but ruled out due to the periodontal disease and existing restorations on the neighbouring teeth, so no healthy tooth structure was sacrificed.
- Material
- Multilayered zirconia
- Period
- Approx. 2 months
- Visits
- 5 visits
- Cost
- Self-pay total ¥757,100 (incl. tax). Breakdown: ¥649,900 three-unit multilayered zirconia bridge + cleaning and extraction.
Risks & side effects
Main risks & side effects
- Abutment teeth must be prepared (existing restorations minimised additional reduction)
- Risk of debonding or fracture over time, especially under heavy bite forces
- Cleaning under the pontic requires tools such as floss threaders or interdental brushes
- Periodontal condition must be stabilised and maintained long-term; progression can affect the bridge and supporting teeth
- Unlike an implant, a bridge does not stimulate the bone, so bone loss at the extraction site is expected over time and cannot be fully prevented
- Temporary sensitivity in abutment teeth is possible
- If an abutment tooth fails, the whole bridge may need replacing
- Zirconia is durable but can fracture under extreme force; a night guard may be advised if grinding is present
